Koh Tao

Koh Tao Dive Sites

Ko Tao is an island in Thailand. Restaurants, nightspots and dive shops cluster in Mae Haad Beach and near Sai Ri Beach. Villas dot palm-fringed beaches such as Chalok Baan Kao Bay, on the south coast. In the northwest, Koh Nang Yuan is a group of islets with hilltop views. Ko Tao is known for its tropical coral reefs, with species including whale sharks and rays. Hawksbill and green turtles gather here to breed.

Shark Island

Shark Island is named not for its carnivorous marine life but for the island’s resemblance to a shark fin from certain angles. The occasional currents bring in nutrient rich waters encouraging an abundance of marine life. Groupers, turtles and schools of raccoon butterfly fish inhabit the shallower depths, and nudibranch nurseries line the eastern coast.

Southwest Pinnacle

A row of pinnacles offering wall dives and fantastic schooling marine life, such as snapper, trevally, and barracuda. The shallower points are carpeted with gardens of sea anemones and the deeper gullies are filled with healthy gorgonians and whip corals. This is one of our favourites Koh Tao diving sites, however it’s often difficult to access due to winds from the southern side of the island.
